The Canadian Rockies

Lake Louise, August 2010

A wild Grizzly bear, quite an amazing sight.

The beautiful Lake Louise was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848-1939). She was the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and the wife of John Campbell, the Govenor General of Canada (1878-1883). It is actually quite a sad fact that Princess Louise never even visited Lake Louise or infact the province of Alberta.

Peyto Lake
The amazing turqouise colour of this lake is due significant amount of rock flour that ends up in the water from the glacial erosion/migration that takes place.  As the water from the glacier moves down the mountain it picks up rock particles on the way that grind down into a fine flour like substance. The colour that we see  is due to the light refracting off the layer of rock flour spread over the lake. The brightness of the colour also has to do with the weather, season and elevation in which it is being viewed. Peyto Lake proudly covers our Canadian travel guide book which we have been frequently refering to for over a year now.Every time we see the book cover it feels like an achievement, that we have seen one of the most spectacular sights in Canada.
